Tree Pruning North Shore
Considered pruning by qualified arborists across the North Shore, from formative cuts on a young garden planting through to crown lifts over a Mosman driveway or a Lindfield garage.
Poor pruning causes more long-term tree damage than most people realise. A bad cut (a flush cut at the bark collar, a headed-back leader, a lion-tailed canopy) sits invisible for several years before the structural failure shows up. By that point the tree is either dropping limbs or dying from the top. Every cut our crew makes on the North Shore is planned around the branch collar, the species response and the goal of leaving the tree in better structural shape than it started.
Different jobs call for different approaches. A young planted tree in a new garden needs formative cuts, removing competing leaders and crossing branches while the wounds are still small. A mature angophora or fig overhanging a Pymble driveway usually needs a crown lift, clearing the lowest branches so cars and pedestrians can move freely without losing canopy. A hedge running along a boundary wall needs a tidy reduction without exposing bare internal wood. We discuss which approach fits before any climbing starts.
The one job we do not do is topping, cutting across the upper canopy to bring the height down quickly. It looks like progress for a few months, then the tree pushes a mass of weakly attached watersprouts that are far more likely to snap in a storm than the original canopy ever was. Crown reduction, done properly by cutting back to a lateral large enough to take on the leader role, achieves the same height goal without destroying the tree's structure.
What's included
- Crown reduction back to suitable lateral branches
- Crown lift to clear driveways, paths and pool surrounds
- Crown thinning to let more light into a garden or dwelling
- Deadwooding, hangers and brittle limb removal
- Formative pruning for young and recently planted trees
- Hedge reductions and shaping along boundary lines
- Selective removal of codominant or competing leaders
- Chipping of all prunings on site as standard
When you might need this
- → A young tree is developing two competing leaders of equal size
- → Branches are dragging on the gutter or scraping roof tiles
- → Canopy is blocking sun from a patio, pool or veggie garden
- → Dead limbs are visible from the ground after a hot dry summer
- → A formal hedge has grown out of shape over several seasons
- → Vehicle or pedestrian clearance under the canopy is too low
- → A heritage or council-listed tree needs careful periodic management

Tree Pruning FAQs
How is proper pruning different from lopping?
Pruning ends each cut at the natural collar junction so the tree can close over the wound and stay structurally sound. Lopping cuts wherever is easiest (usually mid-branch) leaving stubs that rot inward and push weak regrowth. Lopping is cheaper in the short term and more expensive over the life of the tree.
How much canopy can be safely removed in one visit?
For most established trees on the North Shore, around 20 to 25 percent of the live canopy in a single pass is the practical ceiling. Taking more stresses the tree, forces watersprouting and invites decay through the cut faces. If you need a larger reduction, stage it across two or three seasons and let the tree settle in between.
When is the best time of year to prune on the North Shore?
Most structural work on native species can happen at any time of year, the climate is mild and cuts close over quickly. Stone fruit trees prefer winter when they are fully dormant. Spring-flowering ornamentals are better pruned right after flowering finishes. We match the timing to the species when we quote.
Can bad pruning actually damage a tree permanently?
Yes. Topping hollows the trunk from the inside out as stubs rot inward. Flush cuts at the bark collar remove the tree's natural defence boundary against decay. Removing too much canopy at once starves the root system. Poor pruning on a mature tree can shorten its life by decades.
