Stump Grinding North Shore
Below-grade stump grinding across the North Shore, from a heritage fig stump in a Mosman garden to a blackbutt stump on a steep Killara block above a sandstone shelf.
A stump left after removal slowly becomes a problem. The wood holds moisture, invites termites and fungal growth, throws suckers from the root plate and heaves nearby paving or sandstone steps as the roots shift and die. Grinding it out in one visit removes all of that. On the North Shore we use two machines depending on what the block allows, a narrow walk-behind unit for tight Chatswood and Willoughby gardens that have to thread through a side gate, and a tracked self-propelled grinder for the bigger jobs on larger blocks.
Pricing is based on three things (the stump diameter at ground level, the species, and how deep you want the wood taken. Most clients ask for 200 to 300mm below grade, which is deep enough for turf, paving sand or a shallow garden bed. If you're building over the spot, laying a footing, or putting in a new tree in the same position, we can grind deeper) 400 to 500mm, and chase out the main laterals if needed.
After grinding you're left with a mix of fine chip, soil and root fibre. That fill settles as the wood breaks down, so for anything weight-bearing or for a lawn finish, pull the chip out and backfill with topsoil rather than leaving the hole as is. On sandstone blocks the grinder sometimes has to work around outcrops, we assess that on the quote visit and let you know if it affects the depth or the time estimate.

Stump Grinding FAQs
How deep does the grinder go?
Standard is 200 to 300mm below the surface, that suits new turf, garden beds or paving sand. For a footing, slab or replanting in the same spot we grind to 400 to 500mm and chase the main root laterals. Tell us what's going in after and we'll set the right depth.
Will the machine fit through a narrow North Shore side gate?
If the gate is 900mm or wider, yes. That covers the vast majority of residential properties in the area. For something narrower (or an inside-courtyard stump) we assess it on the quote walk and either crane in a smaller tool or find another route.
What is left in the hole when you are done?
A mixture of wood chips, root fibre and displaced soil, roughly level with the surrounding ground. That fill will drop as the wood rots, so for turf or paving we'd recommend removing the chip and filling with screened topsoil. For a garden bed you can leave it, add compost and let it settle a season before planting anything you value.
Is it cheaper to grind multiple stumps at once?
Yes, because the mobilisation cost is shared across all the stumps in one visit. If you have several left over from old removals, or a row along a boundary fence, it makes sense to do them together. Send through the count and rough diameters and we'll price the lot.
